Commission Calculation Does Not Have to Be Complicated
One of the most common sources of stress for Malaysian barber shop owners at month-end is commission calculation. Different barbers on different structures, mixed service types, cash and digital payments that may not all be recorded in the same place. This guide walks through the calculation for each common pay structure.
Method 1: Flat Rate Per CustomerFormula: Commission = Number of customers served x flat rate per customer
Example: Barber Ali served 92 customers in March at RM 10 per customer.
Commission = 92 x RM 10 = RM 920
Simple. The only requirement is an accurate count of customers per barber. If customers are assigned to barbers in a digital queue system, this count is automatic.
Method 2: Percentage of Service RevenueFormula: Commission = Total service revenue attributed to barber x commission percentage
Example: Barber Faiz generated RM 3,200 in service revenue in March at 40% commission.
Commission = RM 3,200 x 0.40 = RM 1,280
This requires tracking which services each barber performed and at what price — something a POS system handles automatically when services are assigned to barbers at checkout.
Method 3: Hybrid (Base Salary + Commission)Formula: Commission = Base salary + (revenue above threshold x commission rate)
Example: Barber Haris has a base of RM 600 and earns 30% on all revenue above RM 2,000. He generated RM 3,500 in March.
Commission above threshold = (RM 3,500 - RM 2,000) x 0.30 = RM 450
Total pay = RM 600 + RM 450 = RM 1,050
If a barber took a cash advance during the month, deduct it from their final commission:
Final pay = Calculated commission - cash advances taken
Always document advances at the time they are taken, not at month-end. This avoids disputes.
